Andrews Residence

This addition to a home in Portland’s west hills consists of an extended stay living suite for parents of the homeowner, located over a new 2-car garage with a utility/laundry room, storage and a mudroom. By designing a contiguous roof over the house and pavilion-like addition, DMS was able to increase the square footage allowable per zoning, and provide the project amenities required by the owners.

The suite and main house share a large raised deck area overlooking the back yard and greenery beyond. Internally, the kitchenette, eating and living areas occupy a 1½ – story space with large window walls oriented towards views of the deck and forest, with an open loft above accessed via an alternating-step ladder. A bedroom and office at the rear of the addition flank a flexible bathroom layout that can be configured as required for privacy via a series of pocket doors.

Custom storage and display areas were incorporated in the design to maintain an organized and uncluttered feel to the interior. A tightly constructed exterior envelope, radiant floor heating, and a heat recovery ventilator provide for a comfortable, energy efficient living space. Interior photos courtesy of Mountainwood Homes.
